BECOMING THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF

According to the World Health Organisation,
1 in 4 adults aren’t moving enough.

Leading a sedentary lifestyle leads to muscle atrophy. It is the medical term that describes the process of your muscles wasting away. When your muscles aren’t exercised to their full capacity, they begin to break down.

When your body begins to lose muscle, your metabolism slows and you begin to gain weight. Increased body fat eats away at testosterone, and it can be a vicious cycle. Low testosterone causes depression, lethargy, and fatigue that can keep you from exercising to lose fat and build muscle.

After age 30, you begin to lose as much as 3% to 5% per decade. Most of us will lose about 30% of their muscle mass during their lifetimes.

As we all know, Singapore is an aging population and this statistic does not bode well for us. Yes, modern advancement in medical technology has increased our average lifespan but that does not necessarily mean our quality of life will not be compromised.

Muscle atrophy also leads to a decrease in bone mass. As bones grow more fragile and susceptible to fracture, they are more likely to break after even a minor fall or a far less obvious stress, such as bending over to tie a shoelace.

Just last year that here in Singapore, osteoporotic hip fractures in women over the age of 50 is currently the highest in Asia.

A well designed strength training regiment can have a tremendous impact on bone, increasing density, size, and mechanical strength and is one of the major factor to preventing these health complications as mentioned before.
