What Is The Job Of A Personal Trainer?

The job of a Personal Trainer is to value add to whichever fitness goals you are trying to achieve (e.g strength training to become stronger) by maximizing results and getting you there safely.

Is it Worth To Have A Personal Trainer?

Many often wonder if the cost of having a Personal Trainer is worth it.

The short answer is perhaps.

If you have the intrinsic motivation, you can join a gym and plan your own program independently by referring to the numerous resources available online, not a problem at all.

However a good and responsible Personal Trainer will always assess and take into account of their client’s proficiency thereby customizing a training plan to suit their needs and challenge them adequately. Expert trainers know how to scale a movement according to your fitness level or mobility. Especially when it comes to compound movements or multi joint movements where form is critical.  There is no cookie cutter program or form that suits everyone.

Some of the best personal trainers I’ve met in Singapore are the ones that are passionate and immerse themselves fully in the sport and its culture. Having that dedication and spark does not directly correlate to their education or certification level in fitness. In fact, experience, especially in their respective competitive sport should be valued more.

Expert trainers will also impart the crucial foundations of training to their clients and not fluff up the training with fancy and unnecessary movements. The end goal would be to educate you on how to train independently. Therefore as a client, it is also important that you question, learn and clear any doubts with your Personal Trainer.

It is always a good idea to have an initial consultation with your PT, let him understand your goals and how he can help achieve the results that you want. Make sure the both of you are on the same page especially when it comes to the schedule. Consistency is of the utmost importance, and it is your job as the client to show up! Be smart about your experience at the gym and learn from it. It can be a very rewarding and enjoyable experience.
